A large sterling silver drinking flask with hidden central compartment for fly fishing flies. This is a stunning piece, very simple in design, but very high in quality. The flask has a soft curve to it which was designed to make it comfortable in a pocket, following the contour of the body. The thick gauge flask has a classic bayonet lid that is in working, sealed condition and can be used without issue. The hidden gem to this quite unique flask is the compartment in the body. There is a small button to press in the middle of the body to open up the flask like a cigarette case. This opens to reveal a gilt washed interior with three rows of nineteen small sprung hooks that allow the flies to be stored in keeping them safe and free from damage.
We have been lucky enough to buy and sell a number of rare and interesting flasks that conceal everything from cigarette cases, drinking cups, cigar holders, match safes and so on, but this is the very first time we have owned a flask with a compartment designed to hold fishing flies. Through research one other example has been identified, but by a different maker, and a different design. This item is very rare and special indeed. The perfect accessory for the gentleman sportsman.
The flask is in superb condition throughout. The lid is a classic bayonet style fitting, secure, and with a cork liner to prevent any leakage. Made in Chester, England, in 1903. This is perhaps the perfect companion for any keen and patient fisherman. The makers marks are for Daniel George Collins silversmiths who produced a large number of fine pieces for well over half a century.
